There is not a fanbase in America who can even come close to the fan following that OSU has. OSU fans don't just travel well, their fans are already living where the Buckeyes are going. This is why they always represent well in every bowl game the play in, even if it is a lower tier bowl, which hasn't happened since the interim coach year of 2011(Gator), and 2004 (Alamo) before that.
A buddy of mine and I were talking about fan bases this evening, over a couple beers. He asked me who the top college fan bases are (not just Semifinal teams). I said, "Like the Dallas Cowboys, OSU is America's team - You either love them or hate them." He laughed (he's from New Jersey), and said no way! Of course I had to look it up, but before I did, I correctly predicted the top 4, and you can probably guess who they are too (and even #5). Think about the top 4, then read the list and graphic below.
This list was generated by Tony Altimore, using multiple studies conducted by the New York Times 2011, 2014, and 2019 (538 studies total).
4.) Penn State 6.36 million
3.) Texas Longhorns 7.82 million
2.) Notre Dame 8.21 million
-and far and away the top fan base -
1.) The Ohio State University 11.26 million
This CFP Semifinal should be the highest rated postseason in college football history. The reason is simple, the final four teams, and their giant fanbases. The only thing holding the ratings back would be that it is on ESPN, and not on a network TV station.
If you weren't surprised by that list, here is one that certainly will surprise you:
Top fanbase across America including College Football, NFL and MLB
1.) The Ohio State University 11.26 million
2.) Dallas Cowboys 8.5 million
3.) Notre Dame 8.21 million
4.) New York Yankees 8.2 million
As always, be kind, everybody gets an upvote here.
