Biggest Concerns About Texas

OSU is the heavy favorite to both beat Texas and win it all obviously. But Texas definitely has a few things to be worried about. On paper this may be the toughest matchup for OSU in the entire bracket. I think OSU wins but here is what I’m worried about:

  • Texas OL-This will be the best OL that OSU faces this year. OT Kelvin Banks(#2 OT) and OT Cameron Williams(#5 OT) are high end draft prospects. Their interior lineman are also each top 10 prospects as their positions according to ESPN. However Williams missed the ASU game due to a knee sprain and Banks left the game due to injury. At times this year the OSU DL has been neutralized so there is always the concern it happens again
  • Texas DL-Similarly on the other side their DL is really talented with two DTs in the top 150 of the draft board and a DE who won freshman of the year over JJ Smith. Oregon had a good DL especially at DE but Texas is more similar to Michigan with big bodies in the middle. Alfred Collins(6’5” 320) and Vernon Brought(6’4” 305) are dudes. This will probably be tough up the middle.
  • Texas DBs-This again is probably the best secondary we would play in the playoffs. Andrew Makuba(#9 S) is good and CB Jahdae Barron(1st team SEC) + talented sophomore Malik Muhammad are tough.
  • Analytics-The advanced analytics love Texas. FPI has them within 1 point of OSU and FEI has them at #4 overall with the #2 defense(better than OSU) and the #18 offense(worse than teams like Clemson and Louisville)

Texas is honestly a very hard team to accurately gauge. The NFL talent and analytics show them as clearly an elite team, however the eye test shows something very different. The only ranked SEC team they played was Georgia who beat them twice. They played a relatively close game with Clemson(who threw for 340 and 3 TDs on them) and were taken to the wire with ASU. They started the year on fire but seemed to really slow down.

On paper this looks like the toughest game possible in the bracket matchup wise but we will see
