Ohio State vs. Notre Dame for a Natty. Doesn't get much better than that. To pass the time, here are some interesting nuggets:

  • The 2 campus's are separated by 257 miles, making it the 2nd closest proximity title game in the BCS/CFP era. Alabama and Georgia are closer by ~24 miles
  • Henderson (33 yards) and Judkins (40 yards) are both within reach of 1,000 yards. While OSU has never had 2 RB's each account for 1,000 yards, Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde both achieved the feat in 2013
  • Ryan Day or Marcus Freeman will become just the 3rd active coach to have won a national title (Smart and Dabo)
  •  Ohio State and Notre Dame will play for the 3rd consecutive season. The last time Ohio State played a non-conference opponent 3 consecutive years, was when they faced off against Pitt 4 straight years from '93-'96. Ohio State won every game and Mark May became destined to hate OSU to his grave. As a note, Ohio State also faced Washington (non-big ten version) 3 consecutive years during that same timeframe.
  • With a win, Ryan Day will move to 7-6 in Top-5 matchups, joining Urban Meyer as the only other Buckeye coach to have a winning record in Top-5 matchups (7-3).
  • Emeka Egbuka needs 95 yards and 3 catches to pass Michael Jenkins and KJ Hill for the all-time receiving yards/catches in program history. As a note, the NCAA record books still do not reward bowl stats pre-2002, disqualifying Jenkins 155 yard outburst in the 2001 outback bowl. According to official NCAA books, Egbuka is already the record holder for receiving yards.
  • 9.5 point favorites. There have been 4 National Championship games with a spread larger than a touchdown. The favorites are 2-2 in those games. Ohio State was involved in both upsets, beating Miami (-11.5) in 2002, but losing to Florida (+7.5) in 2006. In total, Ohio State has been involved in 5 of the 6 title games featuring the largest spreads.
  • Iron horses - Ohio State has played in 54, soon to be 55, games since JTT and Jack Sawyer first suited up. Both of them have played in every game. In fact, JTT (55), Sawyer (55), and Burke (51) will or already have broken JT Barrett's former record for most games played in a Buckeye jersey, while Egbuka (50) will tie JT against Notre Dame
  • Defense wins championships again? Ohio State (12.2 ppg) and Notre Dame (14.3 ppg) rank 1st and 2nd in points allowed per game. This is the first National Championship to feature the 2 statistically best defenses since Alabama vs. Notre Dame in 2012.
  • TreVeyon Henderson has 853 career receiving yards. He needs 87 yards to pass Bo Rein for the most career receiving yards as a RB in Ohio State history. Henderson will finish his career with the 3rd most scrimmage yards in Ohio State history, behind Archie Griffin and JK Dobbins.
  • Claimed Titles gets messy, but most sources agree that Ohio State and ND both have 8 titles in the AP era. The winner will take sole possession of 2nd place behind Alabama
  • "His players" -  With a win, Ryan Day would become the 1st OSU coach since Woody to win a National Championship with a full roster that he built. Both the 2002 and 2014 starting lineups were composed of 50% or greater of the former coaches recruits
  • Among many memories, the great Terry Glenn is maybe most remembered for his touchdown against Notre Dame. Glenn averaged a whopping 22 yards every time he caught the ball. For reference, JJ Smith is currently averaging 17.3 yards
  • Jeremiah Smith needs 202 yards to pass his coach, Brian Hartline, for the 27th most receiving yards in Ohio State history.
