Jack Sawyer's strip/sack and score is one of the greatest plays in OSU history. It will make the top 5 if they win the National Championship. Right now, that play is in with several others that clinched a huge win. Here are the top plays that come to mind. Maybe you can think of others...
"Holy Buckeye!" OSU is 10-0, having BCS aspirations. Purdue, who has not lost a game by more than 7 points (and could easily be undefeated) came in to town and shut the Buckeyes offense down all day. Maurice was hurt all game, and was unavailable for the 4th and 1. I was screaming to kick the 55 yard FG, but it was a windy day, and Tressel made the gutsy call. 64 Y Shallow Swap was the play call, Craig was supposed to hit Harstock like he did in the previous play, but he was covered by the linebacker. Jenkins was supposed to run a short post route, but he was covered, he went deep instead. This play call, and the pass took some serious balls.
Ezekiel Elliott is on here twice. Once for the obvious, 85 Yards Through the Heart of the South.
Ezekiel's coming out party. The other often forgotten 4th &1 in buckeye lore. Urban Meyer, the known Wolverine Slayer, probably should have punted on 4th and 1 on Michigan's 44 yard line, nursing a 7 point lead with 5 mintues left in the ball game. Urban never left anything to chance against Michigan. He was not going to give the ball back to Michigan with a chance to tie it up. Urban was cutthroat against Michigan, he always went for the jugular. This was Ezekiel's coming out party, a preview of what was to come in the CCG and the CFP.
The Pass Interference wasn't really the play that won the game, but it will live in our memories forever.
"Because I couldn't go for three". In 2018, I still think Urban should have scored the TD (OSU was on the UM 7 yard line with 1:38 to play) to make the score 68-39, then go for 2. It wasn't a NC season but it would have been the most memorable play call in Urbans career.
Woody did do this, and it was during his NC run in 1968. Woody goes for 2 up 50-14. Ok, this one wasn't the greatest play, and one could argue it started the 10 year war because UM was so pissed off at Woody. The play here is melodramatic, but at least you can see what happened. It starts out with the TD, which put OSU up 50-14, then the failed 2 point conversion.
"We got the ball back". Craig Krenzel threw an untimely interception, but Maurice Clarett made a huge play to keep Miami at arms length.
The Kitchen Sink. This is what the Buckeyes called the play, they send everything but the kitchen sink. This was the final play of the 2002 National Championship season.
Steve Miller Band. Rewind a few seconds to see the live play. I started at the quote, and replay. There is a detailed replay after the cut-out break.
That's my list of Championship season big plays. Let's look at the others, which will begin with Jack. With a win on Monday, I will move this play somewhere in the list above. 83 Yards Deep in the Heart of Texas
The Robot. Joe to David, 1996 season's Rose Bowl. ASU knew they had to contain Boston on this, but he never gave them a chance to touch him, especially after the previous play.
The Shoe. In one of the greatest comebacks in OSU history, and one of the best games by an OSU running backs, Keith Byars cemented himself into history with a great run. It would have been just another great TD, but in the middle of the play, he loses his shoe and keeps on running for the TD.
"On the run, caught by Gonzalez!" OSU in danger of losing to UM, down 21-19 with 47 seconds left in the ballgame, on the UM 30 yard line.
Short. It was clearly a first down, I have no idea what Harbaugh was looking at. It starts at the press conference, then goes back to the play. Watch this, if for nothing else to see Harbaugh whining after the game in the press conference. He quoted Bo, "I am bitterly dissapointed."
