OSU won the National Championship the old fashioned way, they earned it. I am a Michigan fan, but was surprised how much I enjoyed that game on Monday, and was genuinely happy for OSU. I tried to figure out why, and this is what I came up with.
1. As mentioned, you guys were the best team throughout the playoffs and blew the doors off of all challengers. No mysterious ref calls or tough calls (I still remember that Clemson game in 2019), no lucky breaks. Just solid play, solid play calling, and execution on all of that.
2. I wonder if NIL is, at least for now, the best thing to happen to the B10. Recognizing that all P5 programs probably had a little $ out there, the SEC was an absolute joke with paying players under the table. A very close friend had a son at UGA and was very open about it. The stories you hear about SEC bagmen are true. But with NIL other teams could recruit like SEC schools and their talent, though formidable, was diluted to some extent.
3. The OSU kids seemed in large part like really good kids. I want to touch on this lightly, but faith seems to have really taken hold of that team. I am convinced that was a critical reason for Michigan's success these last few years. The OSU kids that I saw get interviewed were humble, bright kids. It is refreshing to see and a huge contrast with some prior CFB champs - see, e.g., teams like Miami and Oklahoma in their hay-days.
Again, sincere congratulations on a well-deserved Championship.
