Some will be mad about internal promotions, but I view this as RD had a succession plan in place offensively. Yes, I think it was accelerated bc Chip was supposed to be here 2 years and Frye wasn’t supposed to go to the nfl, but CEO Ryan Day knows how he wants this to look and wants to promote within to keep continuity.
Brian Hartline, has been under RD for 8 years. He knows everything about this offense. He got to learn from Kevin Wilson, Ryan Day, and Chip Kelly. He got to go from GA to WR coach to Passing Game Coordinator to Co-OC to OC. He’s been on a succession plan for this moment (and maybe the heir apparent to Ryan Day if he wants out in the near future)
Fessler was brought in to learn under Chip, got familiar with the system, and was praised for his work before the internal hire.
I expect this theme to continue as Ryan Day’s coaching tree grows. Analyst/GAs to go up the ranks as they learn the system and plug and play for continuity. I think this is a logical step in the CEO version of Ryan Day where he makes others learn HIS system and then execute it accordingly
