So it finally happened. After almost four years of speculation, backdoor dealings, vague announcements, and promises of "it's coming, it's coming," David Beckham finally announced officially today that his Miami-based major league soccer franchise is going to be a reality.
As a soccer fan in the Miami area, I'm excited, although a bit disappointed that the franchise won't start playing until around the 2020 MLS season. For me, Miami is a perfect city for soccer, even if it has a less than sterling terrible reputation as a sports city in terms of fan loyalty and interest.
Personally, I hope that Beckham resists the natural inclination to sign a bunch of big name over the hill talents and instead focuses on developing talent at the youth level and signing promising young players from mid-level leagues like Argentina, Netherlands, and Brazil (think of what Atlanta United is doing).
