Ohio State excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

women's soccer ends season in morgantown

The Ohio State women's soccer team went dancing this weekend in Morgantown, West Virginia where they faced the Mountaineers in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes season unfortunately came to a close with a 1-0 double overtime loss to the No. 1 seed.

Buckeye goalie Devon Kerr had three saves for the night, holding the West Virginia offense at bay for 103 minutes of play. The game remained scoreless until Michaela Abam of the Mountaineers scored the game winning goal in double overtime.

Overall, this was a good season for this Ohio State team. The Buckeye team concluded the year 11-7-3 and made an NCAA tournament appearance for the seventh time out of the last eight years. Senior Lindsay Agnew led her team in scoring with 10 goals followed by junior Sammy Edwards with six and senior Nichelle Prince with five. Senior goalie Jillian McVicker led the team in saves with 34 in spite of her season ending injury.

men's hockey sweeps Rensselaer

The men's hockey team traveled to Troy, New York this weekend and swept Rensselaer 4-0 and 3-2.

In the first game of the series the Buckeyes shutout RPI 4-0, thanks to 28 saves from goalie Matt Tomkins. Dakota Joshua got things started for Ohio State, scoring the first goal of the game at the end of the first period. The next goal for the Buckeyes came from Nick Shilkey in the second period off of the power play. The team scored the final two goals of the game in the third, including one more from Shilkey and one from Tanner Laczynski.

The second game of the series was more of a close call for the Buckeyes. Ohio State opened up scoring in the first with a goal from Luke Stork. RPI scored two goals in the second to Ohio State's one from Sam McCormick, to tie the game 2-2. Tanner Laczynski scored the game winning goal in the third period, to seal the game for the Buckeyes 3-2.

The team is now 8-4-1 for the season and ranked No. 13 in the nation. Next up the Scarlet and Gray will begin B1G play with a contest at Minnesota December 2.

women's volleyball wins some and loses some

The women's volleyball team went on its road trip of the season last weekend, stopping in Evanston and Champaign, Illinois. The Buckeyes brought home a dominating 3-1 lead over the Northwestern Wildcats and a tough 3-1 loss to the Illini. After the weekend the team is now 18-12 overall and 8-10 in the B1G.

In the game against the Wildcats, the Buckeyes lost the first set, 23-25, but dominated from that point on. Ohio State won the next three sets 25-23, 25-21, and 25-21. Audra Appold led the team with 17 kills and 19.5 total points. Closely following behind with 17 points was Taylor Hughes and Taylor Sandbothe with 15.

In Champaign things went a little different for the Scarlet and Gray. The team lost the first two sets 23-15 and 18-25. The Buckeyes made a mid-match surge to win the third set 25-20 and stay alive. Unfortunately, the Ilini took the fourth set 21-25 to seal the deal. Sunbathe led the team with 18 total points. Hughes contributed 15 and Luisa Schirmer 12 for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State now has one final home weekend of regular season play before hosting the NCAA tournament in Nationwide Arena. The Buckeyes will take on Purdue this Friday and Indian Saturday night after a certain game in the Shoe you might have heard about. The team will have just a short break before the tournament starts on December 1.
