Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Women's Basketball Falls Short Against UConn, Carly Santoro Drops 20

The Ohio State women's basketball team fell short against the No. 2 UConn Huskies this past Sunday by a score of 85-53. While Ohio State lost, there were some spectacular individual performances by Buckeyes all around.

Carly Santoro had herself an excellent night, scoring a season-high 20 points against the No. 2 ranked Huskies. 14 of Santoro's 20 points came in the second half, with the guard tallying three three-pointers. Makayla Waterman also had a great night, recording her first career double-double thanks to her 11 points and career-high 12 rebounds.

While it was a loss, there were many bright spots for the Buckeyes Sunday night. Ohio State actually out-rebounded UConn 40-34, and won the third quarter 22-19. Against such a legendary program, those are respectable results. Next weekend the Buckeyes will travel out west for games against Sacramento State on Friday and Stanford on Sunday.

Women's Volleyball Celebrates Seniors Saturday Night

The Ohio State women's volleyball team celebrated seniors Olivia Dailey and Audra Appold Saturday night. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes lost in a straight set decision to Maryland the same night, dropping their overall record to 12-16.

The first set was hotly contested, with both teams going back and forth, eventually resulting in the teams being locked at 16 all. The Terps would pull ahead by three, but the Buckeyes battled back after a timeout. At the end, with the teams tied at 25, Maryland would score the final two points to clinch the first set.

The second set was just as competitive. Ohio State would jump out to a 10-7 lead, but Maryland would battle back to take a lead of their own at 14-12. Things would once again be tied late, this time at 20. The Terps, however, would utilize their timeout to regroup and eventually clinch the set, 25-23.

The third set was all Maryland, with the Terps taking the set 25-12.

The Buckeyes will finish off their home schedule this weekend taking on Wisconsin on Friday and Minnesota on Saturday.

Men's Tennis Competes in 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships

The Ohio State men's tennis team traveled to Surprise, Arizona this past weekend to participate in the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. Unfortunately, in the main draw for men's doubles, both of the Buckeye duos consisting of Martin Joyce and Hunter Tubert, and Kyle Seelig and Alex Kobalt were eliminated in the first round. Both duos found some success in the consolation bracket, making it as far as the quarterfinals.

In the main draw for men's singles, both John McNally and Kyle Seelig would advance to the round of 16. Ironically, both McNally and Seeling would be eliminated in the round of 16 as well. Martin Joyce also participated in the draw, but would experience limited success, being eliminated in the first round. Joyce was the lone Buckeye to participate in the consolation draw, and he would once again be eliminated in the first round.

While Ohio State did not take home any silverware, it was still a competent performance by the Buckeyes, and the school was well represented.
