Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Women's Basketball Suffers Cancellations Due to California Wildfires

The Ohio State women's basketball team suffered cancellations for their games against Sacramento State and Stanford this weekend due to the poor air quality in Northern California as a result of the wildfires. The games will not be rescheduled, and the teams will work on attempting to play again next year.

Women's Volleyball Falls to Third Ranked Minnesota

Ohio State women's volleyball fell to the No. 3 Golden Gophers this past Saturday in their final match in St. John Arena. While the Buckeyes may have lost, they still played very well, being only the the second team in the Big Ten to push Minnesota to five sets this season.

The first set was very close. Tied at 23, junior Ana Beatriz Franklin recorded back to back kills to seal the set for the Buckeyes. The Golden Gophers would take the next two sets by counts of 25-20 in the second set and 25-13 in the third set. The fourth set was extremely close as well. With things tied at 23 once again, freshman Vanja Bukilic was the hero this time with two kills to secure the set. Ohio State fought hard in the fifth set, and while they were able to keep things close, they lost the set 15-11.

The Buckeyes lost, but it was a valiant performance against such a top tier opponent. Ohio state goes on the road to face Nebraska on Friday and Iowa on Saturday to close out their season. Let's hope Ohio State can finish their season strong.

Women's Ice Hockey Sweeps Minnesota Duluth on Saturday

After defeating the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 3-1 on Friday, the two teams met again to finish their series on Saturday.

Ohio State would concede the first goal of the game, but sophomore Tatum Skaggs would even things up on a power play, making the score 1-1. Freshman Sara Saekkeinen would also record a goal, but from that point on, things were all about Skaggs. The sophomore was responsible for two more goals, notching the second hat trick of her career, and solidifying a 4-1 victory for the Buckeyes. Freshman goalie Andrea Braendli also had a great day with a fantastic 21 saves.

Following this victory, Ohio State will enjoy a bye week before traveling to Mankato, Minnesota to play the Minnesota State Mavericks on November 30th.
