Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.
Women's Soccer's Devon Kerr Receives First Team Scholar All-Region Honors
Goalkeeper Devon Kerr has added yet another accolade to an already impressive season after being awarded first team Scholar All-Region honors for the second year in a row. The senior has already been named the 2018 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the year and was a first team All-Big Ten pick. Statistically, Kerr was tied for third most shutouts in the Big Ten with eight, while also boasting a .826 save percentage and a 0.78 goals-against average. Kerr finishes her career with the third most shutouts in Ohio State history with 19 while also boasting a 0.82 goals against average.
However, Devon Kerr was not the only Buckeye to receive recognition. Kylie Knight, Marike Mousset, Arden Holden, and Sarah Roberts were all awarded third team scholar All-Region honors. Congratulations to these Buckeyes on being acknowledged for their excellent performances this season!
Women's Basketball Falls to Washington on West Coast Road Trip
The Ohio State women's basketball team traveled back to the west coast this past Wednesday to do battle with the Washington Huskies. The Buckeyes would unfortunately fall 69-59 to the Huskies, but it almost seemed as if Ohio State beat itself. Not only did OSU go down early, but a season high 21 turnovers would put an end to any of the Buckeye comeback efforts.
While the end result was a loss, there were still some notable individual performances. Freshman Dorka Juhasz recorded 11 points and nabbed six rebounds while Makayla Waterman scored 11 points an grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Najah Queenland also had a good night going 4 for 5 with eight points and four steals. The Buckeyes will return to the court on December 16th to host the Florida Gators at St. John Arena.
Women's Ice Hockey Prepares for Series With Mercyhurst
The Ohio State women's ice hockey team is preparing for a showdown with the Mercyhurst Lakers on the 15th and 16th later this month. Ohio State has been in good form recently, winning three out of their last four games, and boasting a 12-6 overall record. Mercyhurst has also been surging, only losing one of their past six games with an 8-7-2 record.
This is clearly going to be a hotly contested series between two competitive squads. However, it seems as if Ohio State will have the edge in this one. Mercyhurst has not had much success against Big Ten opponents losing to both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Furthermore, the Buckeyes will have the home advantage. Hopefully, OSU can come out on top in this one and continue trending in the right direction.
