The Ohio State Board of Trustees’ newest committee is focused on the continued growth of Ohio State athletics in the new era of college sports.

As Ohio State begins the 2024-25 academic year, the Board of Trustees has formed a new Athletics Committee with an eye toward increasing the strategic alignment between the board and Ohio State’s athletic administration.

“It is common for the chair to propose modifications to the Board of Trustees committee structure,” an Ohio State spokesperson told Eleven Warriors. “As the national collegiate athletics landscape continues to evolve, strategic alignment between the board and university administration is even more critical and the Athletics Committee will allow the board to best advise and lead one of the university’s highest-profile units.”

The new committee is chaired by Gary Heminger, the former CEO of Marathon Petroleum, who has served on Ohio State’s Board of Trustees since 2018. Michael Kiggin, a founding member of the Capitol Strategy Group who is in his second term on the Board of Trustees, is the vice chair of the Athletics Committee.

Other trustees on the committee are Alan Stockmeister, Elizabeth Kessler, Jeff Kaplan, Pierre Bigby, Bradley Kastan, George Skestos and John Zeiger, an ex-officio member of the committee as the chairman of the board.

The Athletics Committee will hold its first meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday as a part of the Board of Trustees’ first full-board meeting of the school year, which will be held from Tuesday through Thursday and livestreamed by WOSU. Per the committee meeting schedule, Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork is scheduled to speak about the landscape of college athletics during the Athletics Committee’s initial meeting.
