Emma Shumate will look for a new home in 2024.
The Ohio State redshirt sophomore announced Wednesday that she will enter the transfer portal after three seasons with the Buckeyes. She will have two years of eligibility remaining.
A Dresden, Ohio, native, Shumate spent the last three seasons at Ohio State. After a redshirt season in 2021-22 following her transfer from West Virginia, Shumate contributed off the bench in each of the past two seasons. She appeared in 58 games for the Buckeyes, averaging 2.8 points and 10.5 minutes per contest while shooting 33.6% from deep.
This past season, Shumate scored a career-high 22 points in Ohio State's 85-45 win over Ohio University on Dec. 5, connecting on six of 10 3-point attempts. It was one of two career games where she reached double-digit points for the Buckeyes.
It was unclear whether Shumate’s role would have increased next season with the Buckeyes set to return Madison Greene, Diana Collins, Kennedy Cambridge and Kaia Henderson at guard, with Rikki Harris also having the option to return for another year of eligibility. Ohio State will also welcome a pair of top-100 prospects to the backcourt in shooting guard Ava Watson and five-star point guard Jaloni Cambridge, the younger sister of Kennedy Cambridge and a Gatorade National Player of the Year finalist.
Shumate becomes the first Buckeye to enter the transfer portal since Sunday’s season-ending loss to Duke.
