Ohio State’s top target at wide receiver in the 2023 class is getting closer to making a decision.
Five-star Florida wideout Carnell Tate released his top five school list on Tuesday night, revealing a final five of Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Tate is ranked as the 21st-best prospect nationally and the third-best wideout in the 2023 cycle per 247Sports’ composite rankings. He visited Notre Dame on Tuesday and will visit Georgia next weekend. He also plans to visit Ohio State in April with his 7-on-7 team, South Florida Express, a group that includes fellow Ohio State targets Brandon Inniss, Sharif Denson and Daemon Fagan, among others. Tate also expects to take a trip to Tennessee on April 8-9. A visit to Alabama is not yet planned.
While Tate has taken his time with his recruitment, he could make a decision by the summer, according to 247Sports. The Buckeyes are considered the favorite in Tate’s recruitment, as two Crystal Ball projections have been cast in favor of Tate joining the Buckeyes.
Notre Dame, Tennessee and to a lesser extent Georgia and Alabama are still lurking, but Tate’s longstanding relationship with Ohio State and Brian Hartline cannot be discounted. Tate made several visits to Ohio State in 2021, including for the Penn State and Michigan State games.
“The development there is great with coach Hartline, one of the best wide receiver coaches in college football and coach Day getting their wide receivers the ball,” Tate told 247Sports. “The proof is right there with Jaxon (Smith-Njigba), (Garrett Wilson) and Chris Olave and you got Marvin Harrison Jr. coming up next. The proof is there and the path is there for me to follow."
Spillman to visit OSU for spring game
A 2024 linebacker with an Ohio State offer plans to visit Columbus for the Buckeyes’ spring game.
Tennessee 2024 linebacker Edwin Spillman told Eleven Warriors he will make the trek to OSU on April 16 with his family and plans to meet with the Buckeyes’ coaching staff while he’s on campus.
While the 6-foot-2, 221-pound Spillman does not yet hold a 247Sports ranking, he has already picked up 10 Division I offers, including Ohio State, Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, NC State, Tennessee and Eastern Kentucky. Spillman received his OSU offer after attending a camp last June, and also visited Ohio State for the Akron game in September.
“I loved it,” Spillman said of his visit in September. “Just like the atmosphere there was great, just like the whole environment. I got to talk to coach Day and coach Alford before the game and I really enjoyed that. They all told me that they really liked me and were really interested, they’d like to see me come down more visits down the road and keep that relationship going and everything.”
OSU sets summer camp dates
Speaking of summer camps, Ohio State has set its recruiting camp dates for this summer. Over a three-week period in June, Ohio State will hold a total of nine camps for high school and middle school football players that are sure to attract prospects from all over the country.
The dates for the one-day high school camps are as follows:
- Wednesday, June 1
- Monday, June 6
- Tuesday, June 7
- Tuesday, June 14
- Wednesday, June 15
- Tuesday, June 21
The morning sessions at each of those camps will be primarily for offensive and defensive linemen, while skill position players will camp in the afternoons. Ohio State will also host a youth camp (5th-8th grade) on June 8-9, a seven-on-seven competition for high school teams on June 16 and a middle school seven-on-seven competition on June 22.
Those camps will likely lead to plenty more Ohio State offers for prospects in the 2023 and 2024 classes and beyond, and Eleven Warriors will be in attendance for all of the high school camps to interview prospects of interest and share observations, videos and photos.
