Ohio State won the 2014 national championship, but its 2016 team will require the services of a new generation of Buckeyes.
So when Cleveland, Ohio celebrated its first championship in 53 years Sunday night after the Cleveland Cavaliers skewered the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, Urban Meyer—not a "Cavs guy," according to him—saw in it a reminder to his team on the ultimate reward and price of greatness.
"Why do we do what we do?" Meyer rhetorically asked. "To win championships. And how do we do that? Nine [units] strong... If you don't get a tear in your eye watching that, you need to look in the faces of some of these athletes who gave their life to their teammates... I saw a guy who backed up what he said... and I thought, 'I can't wait to do that again with a group of players.'"
Ohio State's first road to a 2016 national title begins Sept. 3rd against Bowling Green.
