Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye. Across the Shield follows those who once wore Scarlet and Gray on their journeys through the NFL.

It was a rough weekend for the local team (and all Ohio football teams, really), but luckily, to save us a little bit, some former Buckeyes did big things in the NFL this past weekend.

Let's take a look at some.

Samuel Scores

Earlier this week, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Norv Turner spoke with the media and had this to say about Curtis Samuel.

"He missed most of camp, as we know, and then he obviously had a very, very serious condition. We have plans for Curtis. ... Curtis is gonna get his shot."

Samuel got his shot indeed on Sunday as he took a reverse play 16 yards to the house to start what would be an epic Carolina comeback.

The Panthers would go on to stun the Eagles. Samuel, in addition to that run, added a 25-yard pass reception.

Elsewhere in this game, Malcolm Jenkins recorded seven tackles, and Cameron Johnston had three punts for an average of 45.0 yards.

Michael Thomas Guarding Update: Can't

After a few subpar weeks (by his standards) the New Orleans Saints wide receiver bounced back in a big way against the Ravens, hauling in seven catches for 69 yards and this score.

Thomas made huge plays in this one, including a few where Drew Brees scrambled and was able to hit Thomas for critical first downs.

"Can't Guard Mike" spoke to the media after the game, discussing the win.

Elsewhere in this game, Marshon Lattimore played very well, and recorded three tackles and several deflections. Vonn Bell also had three tackles, and Kurt Coleman added two.

Jalyn Holmes Records First Career Sack

After being selected in the 4th round, Jalyn Holmes had yet to make a significant play on the professional football field until yesterday, when he recorded his first career sack.

His coach, Mike Zimmer, had some fun with it:

Congratulations to Jalyn on what hopefully is the first of many.

Elsewhere in this game, Darron Lee recorded two tackles.

Hyde Traded to Jaguars

Former Buckeye running back Carlos Hyde swapped teams this weekend, when he was traded from the Browns to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Browns received a 5th round pick as compensation. Prior to the trade, Hyde rushed 114 times for 382 yards (3.4 ypc) and five touchdowns. He was inactive this week as he still was learning the playbook.

A Few Transactions

Several more Buckeyes were involved in transactions this week.

Terrelle Pyror was released by the New York Jets after suffering an injury that will keep him out a few weeks.

Luckily for Pryor, it appears he will have interest when he recovers.

Next, J.T. Barrett continues his bounce on-and-off the New Orleans Saints' practice squad, being added back this week.

This is the fourth time already that Barrett has been added to the practice squad this season. He has yet to appear on the active roster in any game.

The Saints also placed wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. on injured reserve. Saints head coach Sean Payton expressed hope that Ginn would be able to return this season.

Ginn recorded 12 catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns before going down.

Elsewhere, the San Francisco 49ers promoted safety Tyvis Powell from their practice squad on to the active roster.

He did not record any statistics in the 49ers loss to the Rams yesterday.
