The estate of late former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins has come to a settlement with the driver, the owner and the broker of the dump truck that struck and killed him in April 2022, per a statement from Rick Ellsley, the lawyer representing Haskins’ widow.

Haskins was attempting to cross I-595 near Fort Lauderdale Airport on April 9, 2022 when the vehicle struck him and took his life. The lawsuit, filed by Haskins’ widow Kalabrya Haskins, alleged that the driver of the dump truck was speeding, driving recklessly and carrying cargo that was above the allotted weight.

Details of the settlement were undisclosed.

A toxicology report done on Haskins’ body found that he had a blood-alcohol content above Florida's legal limit of .08, with separate samples finding his BAC to be .20 and .24. The anesthetic drugs ketamine and norketamine, which are also used recreationally, were also found in his system.

The suit also alleged negligence by the rental car company who gave Haskins his vehicle, the Florida Department of Transportation and the contractor who posts signage along the I-595 roadway.

In addition, the suit alleges that Haskins’ death was part of a larger “blackmail and robbery conspiracy” to target the professional football player, naming four people, a hotel and a golf driving range as defendants. A woman was found to be in the car with Haskins on the night of his death.

The medical examiner ruled Haskins' death to be an accident, with multiple blunt-force injuries to be the cause. No criminal charges have been filed.

Haskins started one season at Ohio State in 2018 and broke the school records for single-season passing yards and touchdowns with 4,831 and 50, marks that still stand. He holds the all-time Big Ten records in both single-season categories as well.

Following his career in Columbus he was drafted by the Washington Commanders with the 15th overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons in Washington, throwing for 2,804 yards and 12 touchdowns with 14 interceptions before being waived and resuming his career in Pittsburgh.

Legal proceedings are still ongoing from Haskins’ estate, per Ellsley, with the case continuing in Broward County Circuit Court against multiple other defendants. Ellsley added that settlements with “various other parties” have been reached previously.
