Despite being listed as questionable on Ohio State's status report entering Saturday, Lathan Ransom started for the Buckeyes at "Bandit," or boundary safety, against the Hilltoppers.

Ransom played in 12 of Ohio State's 13 games in 2022 after usurping Josh Proctor at the bandit spot in Week 1 against Notre Dame. He finished third on the team with 74 tackles, adding 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception and three pass breakups.

Through the first two games of the 2023 season, Ransom has played every one of Ohio State’s 114 defensive snaps at the bandit spot.

Speaking of Proctor, he returns with a clean bill of health after missing Ohio State's Week 2 contest against Youngstown State. He collected four tackles with one tackle for loss and a pass breakup against Indiana in Week 1, and Ryan Day said Thursday that Proctor would start and “play a lot” against Western Kentucky.

With Ransom and Proctor in tow, Ohio State rolled with its usual starting unit of Proctor at free safety, Ransom at boundary safety and Sonny Styles at nickel safety.

In a late addition to the status report, tight end Joe Royer is unavailable against Western Kentucky. Royer appeared in each of Ohio State's first two games of the season, though he did not record a reception. He had two catches for 10 yards in 2022.

The only other Buckeye to see action in the first two games who is listed on this week’s status report is freshman Arvell Reese, who was on the kickoff coverage unit for Ohio State’s first two games but is out for this week’s game after suffering an injury on the Buckeyes’ first kickoff against Youngstown State.
