Ohio State's running back depth will be in for a major challenge against Purdue on Saturday.

Starting running back TreVeyon Henderson entered the matchup with the Boilermakers listed as questionable after missing last week's Maryland game with an undisclosed injury. As the team went through its final pregame warm-ups in full pads, however, Henderson was spotted in a hoodie, confirming that he'll be out on Saturday.

He has 44 carries for 295 yards (6.7 yards per carry) and five touchdowns in four games this season, including a key 61-yard score against Notre Dame in Week 4.

Third-string back Miyan Williams is among 10 other players listed as out against the Boilermakers. Though he has just 96 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries in 2023, he has the experience of a productive 2022 campaign in which he rushed for 825 yards at a clip of 6.4 yards per carry.

With Henderson unable to play, it will mean the second consecutive start for the rusher who is usually his backup, Chip Trayanum. Trayanum has 45 carries for 207 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and three touchdowns this season, but managed just 61 yards in 20 attempts against the Terrapins last week.

His backup will likely be either redshirt sophomore Evan Pryor or sophomore Dallan Hayden. Pryor came in as a four-star prospect known for his blazing speed and was expected to see time as the team's third running back behind Henderson and Williams last year, but he tore his ACL during fall camp and missed the season.

Hayden saw the field as a freshman in 2022 after injuries piled up in the room, picking up 111 carries for 553 yards (5.0 yards per carry) and five touchdowns. He played three snaps and made one catch for a loss of two yards against Indiana to open the 2023 season, but has not seen the field since as Day confirmed Tuesday that the team is looking to redshirt him.

In further confirmation of news that broke Friday evening, star receiver Emeka Egbuka is out against Purdue with a lower-body injury he sustained against Maryland. Egbuka has 22 receptions for 303 yards and three touchdowns this year, and his ailment could mean a start for either sixth-year senior Xavier Johnson or freshman Carnell Tate. Johnson could also be an option for carries at running back.

Defensive tackle Jaden McKenzie – who has seen rotational work in 2023 – was also listed as questionable entering the matchup with Purdue, but entered in the second quarter for Ohio State.

Third-string tight end Joe Royer is another addition to this week's injury report. Royer has been used sparingly behind Cade Stover and Gee Scott Jr., seeing 16 or more snaps in Weeks 1 and 2 but only getting one snap of action total since then. He was out for Ohio State’s third game of the season against Western Kentucky, but was available for the Buckeyes’ last two games.

Defensive end/linebacker Arvell Reese and cornerback Jyaire Brown are not listed on this week's injury report after missing the Maryland game, indicating that both of them are available to return to play.
