Xavier Johnson has gone from walk-on to contributor to now a starter at Ohio State.

With star receiver Emeka Egbuka out with injury against Purdue on Saturday, Johnson took the first snaps for the Buckeyes at slot receiver.

Johnson has four receptions for 58 yards and five carries for 25 yards in 2023. He saw action in spots in 2022 as well, making key touchdown catches against both Notre Dame and Georgia. In total, he finished last year's campaign with 13 receptions for 151 yards, 12 carries for 146 yards and three total touchdowns.

Johnson has also served as Ohio State's kick returner this season, averaging 22.7 yards across seven returns. He returned 12 kicks for 269 yards (22.4 yards per return) in 2022.

In addition to his on-field successes, Johnson was awarded the Buckeyes' "Block O" jersey this offseason, which was created in memory of Bill Willis, a College and Pro Football Hall of Famer whose No. 99 is retired in the Horseshoe. It is awarded annually to one of the team's exemplary leaders. Johnson is also a team captain.
