Ohio State will be without the services of its starting nose tackle on Saturday.
After not playing past the second series of last week's game against Michigan State for an undisclosed reason, Mike Hall has been declared out against Minnesota on Ohio State's pregame injury report.
Star linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and backup quarterback Devin Brown are listed as questionable while free safety Josh Proctor is available to return after exiting the Buckeyes' game against Rutgers with a hit to the head.
Eichenberg dressed for the contest against the Golden Gophers but did not start at linebacker.
Ryan Day said on Tuesday that he didn't have an update on Hall, who has collected 17 tackles with two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks on the season.
Ty Hamilton, who has rotated with Hall and starting three-technique Tyleik Williams at defensive tackle this season, is likely to start in Hall's place. Hamilton has 28 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack in 2023. Hero Kanu and Jaden McKenzie are the top depth options behind Williams and Hamilton.
Eichenberg suffered an arm injury in the fourth quarter against the Scarlet Knights and missed the Michigan State game as a result. He is Ohio State's leading tackler on the year with 73 takedowns and a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, given annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.
If he's unable to play, the Buckeyes will again look to Cody Simon at the Mike linebacker position alongside Steele Chambers at Will. Simon collected a team-high five tackles last week in Eichenberg's stead and has 42 tackles on the season. Sophomores C.J. Hicks and Gabe Powers would be next up at the position.
Brown has not played since suffering an ankle sprain in Ohio State’s win over Penn State on Oct. 21. While Brown was available for Ohio State’s game against Rutgers, he aggravated the injury during pregame warmups before last week’s game against Michigan State.
Proctor is expected to return to the starting lineup at free safety alongside Sonny Styles with Lathan Ransom out for the remainder of the regular season with an injury he suffered against Wisconsin. Backup safety Cam Martinez is also out for this week’s game.
