Ryan Day knows it’s time for someone else to be Ohio State’s offensive playcaller.

Day was asked about a wide variety of topics Wednesday during his first press conference of 2024, but the preeminent topic of conversation was Ohio State’s offensive coordinator situation. While Bill O’Brien is a candidate to become the new head coach at Boston College, he was still at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Wednesday, and Day seemed excited about what the veteran coach can bring to the Buckeyes’ offense this season.

Even if O’Brien leaves, however, Day expressed that he is ready to give up offensive play calling for the first time as head coach, recognizing that the demands on his plate as Ohio State’s head coach have become too widespread for him to continue balancing head coaching and offensive coordinating duties at the same time.

Day’s comments on that topic were among the biggest things that stood out to us in Wednesday’s press conference, as well as his comments on transfer quarterback Will Howard, as Day indicated that he expects to use the quarterback more in the running game in 2024.

In our post-press conference edition of Press Coverage, we also discussed what it could mean for James Laurinaitis and Ohio State’s coaching staff that the Buckeyes haven’t hired a 10th assistant coach yet. The positive vibes of Wednesday’s press conference also stood out to us in stark contrast to the negativity that surrounded the program after its Cotton Bowl loss less than six weeks ago.

You can hear all of our biggest takeaways from Wednesday’s press conference in the video at the top of the page. Five minutes wasn‘t enough time for us to cover everything Day talked about on Wednesday, so stay tuned with Eleven Warriors for a longer conversation coming this evening on Real Pod Wednesdays.
