Ohio State held its second spring practice of 2024 on Thursday. Just as it did for its opening spring practice on Tuesday, Ohio State opened up the first 45 minutes of practice to members of the local media.
We didn’t learn a whole lot from Thursday’s practice viewing that we didn’t already learn on Tuesday. The practice script for the portion that was open to reporters was nearly identical to the script for the opening practice, and media members were asked to leave before the Buckeyes started their first competitive period of the practice.
That said, we gathered a bunch of video so that you could get a look for yourselves at the Buckeyes as they participated in their second practice of 2024.

Quarterback rotation remains the same
Ohio State’s order at quarterback remained the same for its second spring practice as its first spring practice with Devin Brown still leading the Buckeyes’ signal-callers through drills. Kansas State transfer Will Howard, like many of the team’s transfer portal acquisitions, remained second in line as Ryan Day tries to ensure there’s strong competition for the starting quarterback job this year.
Second-year quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, a midyear enrollee in 2023, was third in line as he continues working through his first spring, while freshmen Julian Sayin and Air Noland rounded out the rotation.
McGuire first up at punter, Henderson makes appearance at returner
With Jesse Mirco transferring to Vanderbilt this offseason following three seasons as Ohio State’s starting punter, walk-on Joe McGuire took first-team reps as the Buckeyes’ booter for the second consecutive practice on Thursday.
McGuire, much like Mirco, is a graduate of ProKick Australia who hails from Melbourne in the Land Down Under. He appears in line to be Ohio State’s starting punter for the 2024 season right now, though the Buckeyes hosted another Australian punter this week, Nick McLarty, who could compete for the starting job in preseason camp if he signs with the Buckeyes.
Cornerbacks Calvin Simpson-Hunt and Lorenzo Styles Jr. served as the gunners on Ohio State’s first-team punt unit.
The Buckeyes’ punt returners were largely the same during Thursday’s practice, with Emeka Egbuka leading a group of receivers that also included Brandon Inniss, Carnell Tate, Jayden Ballard, Bryson Rodgers and Jeremiah Smith. Running back TreVeyon Henderson also joined the punt returners on Thursday, though he was only with the returners for the first of two punt return periods during Thursday’s practice, and it would be a surprise if he actually returns any punts in games this season.
Additional observations
- Former Ohio State wide receivers Joey Galloway and Marvin Harrison Jr. were both in attendance for Thursday’s practice.
- Ohio State mixed its returning starters with two different groups of offensive linemen during the 11-on-11 formation period at the beginning of practice, so there was no clear first- or second-team unit. That said, Luke Montgomery continued to work at right guard while Tegra Tshabola and Josh Fryar continued to work at right tackle; during individual drills, Montgomery remained with the interior offensive linemen while Fryar and Tshabola were with the tackles.
