After three seasons with the Chicago Bears, former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is on the move.
The Bears traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Steelers are sending the Bears a 2025 sixth-round pick that could turn into a fourth depending on Fields' playing time.
The Bears are moving forward at quarterback, likely selecting USC's Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Fields will head to Pittsburgh to back up newly acquired signal-caller Russell Wilson but could see playing time if Wilson struggles in training camp or in the season, though the Steelers have reportedly informed Fields that he won’t compete with Wilson for the starting job.
The No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields had an up-and-down three-year tenure in Chicago that was marred by coaching changes, patchy offensive line play, a lack of weapons and inconsistent play from Fields. In 2023, he completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,562 yards,16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while running for 657 yards and four scores.
Fields dazzled at times in his second season with Chicago, racking up the second-most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season in NFL history with 1,143 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. In three years in the NFL, he's completed 60.3 percent of his passes, thrown for 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions and ran for 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns.
The standout quarterback who led Ohio State to a national championship appearance in the 2020 season will now have a chance to reset his NFL career in Pittsburgh.
Cant say thank you enough to the city of Chicago for taking me in and embracing me. Thank you to the entire Bears organization and ownership for allowing me the opportunity to be part of such a historic franchise. But most of all thank you to my all my brothers that I played pic.twitter.com/fT1dORwFU5
