Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate is featured in the latest episode of B1G Network’s The Journey, offering fans a closer look at his life beyond football. The sophomore’s story of perseverance, loss, and love is front and center, showcasing how he’s overcome unimaginable tragedy to honor his late mother while excelling on the field.
The episode highlights Tate’s roots in Chicago’s Garfield Park, his unbreakable bond with his mother, Ashley, and the profound impact of her tragic death in July 2023.
"She was my rock," Tate says. "She was like my best friend, mom, and everything, all in one."
Ashley’s passing, a result of gun violence, left Tate reeling, but he found solace in football and the support of his teammates and coaches.
"He's a great example of somebody who came to work, took care of his business, and then found a way to work through the grieving process on his own," Ohio State head coach Ryan Day says. "I have nothing but admiration for how he handled that process."
One of the show’s more emotional moments revisits Tate’s return to Chicago last week, where he scored two touchdowns in front of dozens of friends and family.
