Before Saturday, Ryan Day had never lost to an unranked team.
Losing to an unranked foe is one thing, but the Buckeyes fell at home to an unranked Michigan team, 13-10, that they should have had well outclassed in terms of talent. Regardless of what Day's record is elsewhere, his four straight losses in The Game, especially in this specific rendition of The Game, should have him coaching for his job in the College Football Playoff.
Special teams miscues hurt the Buckeyes but an over-reliance on an ineffective running game, two interceptions thrown by Will Howard, bad offensive line play and a conservative approach killed Ohio State's offense. The defense tried its best to bail the team out but ultimately ran out of gas as Michigan running back Kalel Mullings broke free for a big run to set up a game-winning field goal.
Before every season, as is often said, Ryan Day says Ohio State's three goals are to beat Michigan, win a Big Ten Championship and win the National Championship. Two of those goals are now off the table for the fourth year in a row despite an all-in push to meet them. A run at the third might be needed to save Day's job.
Eleven Warriors' Andy Anders and Dan Hope give their thoughts on the loss and what it means for Day's tenure on After Carmen, which you can watch at the top of the page.
