Powers becomes the first Buckeye to announce he will enter the transfer portal following the conclusion of Ohio State’s regular season.
He will not remain with the team for the College Football Playoff.
Powers flashed in limited action for the Buckeyes this season, recording five total tackles with a pass breakup. The highlight of his Ohio State career came in the Buckeyes’ season opener against Akron when he intercepted a pass off of a deflection by Eddrick Houston and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown.

That play never led to any consistent playing time on defense, however, as Powers played just 28 defensive snaps during the regular season. Facing the possibility of remaining blocked on the depth chart next season with Arvell Reese’s emergence as Cody Simon’s heir apparent at Mike linebacker, Powers has decided to look for a new opportunity to play elsewhere.
Powers has two remaining seasons of collegiate eligibility.
The NCAA transfer portal officially opens next Monday. The portal will be open for players to enter from Dec. 9-28, though players on teams still playing in the postseason will get an additional five-day window to enter the portal after their seasons end. Players do not have to choose their transfer destinations before the portal window closes, and there will be another 10-day window for players to enter the portal from April 16-25.
