In Hockey Valley the Ohio State men’s team dropped a 4-1 decision to Penn State. A choppy, physical game began slowly with a lot of whistles and not much flow. It looked as though the opening period would end in a scoreless tie, but the Nittany Lions squeezed a power play goal in before the first intermission break.

The Buckeyes roared back in the opening minutes of the second period, recording the frame’s first 13 shots. Penn State didn’t hit the net for the first time until midway through the period. A pair of PSU penalties gave OSU a brief two-man advantage. They needed only six seconds to cash in. Matt Weis put home a feed from Christian Lampasso, knotting the game at 1-1.
The goal was Weis’ fourth of the season and his second of the weekend. The freshman very nearly netted another midway through the third period. A heads up pass sprung the freshman on a shorthanded breakaway, but it appeared the puck rolled on him before Weis could finish his shot.

Unfortunately the Buckeyes’ dominance did not continue. Penn State made the most of some Ohio State miscues and regained their lead. The Lions’ David Goodwin pounced on a loose puck which goalie Christian Frey was unable to cover. Less than a minute later a turnover by the OSU defense led to a 2-on-0 and a three goal lead for PSU.
The Nittany Lions added an empty net tally for good measure. Shots in the game were 36-35 in favor of Ohio State. Each team recorded a power play goal.
So the Buckeye men split their series at Penn State. They’re now 2-3-0 in the Big Ten and remain in third place with six points. The team returns to the friendly confines of the Schott next Friday at 7pm to take on Michigan.

The Ohio State women fared better in their penalty-filled afternoon tilt. Senior defenseman Kari Schmitt potted a pair of power play goals. Julia McKinnon recorded her ninth tally of the season, and Kendall Curtis put a little icing on the cake as the Buckeyes cruised to a 4-0 win.
The lady Bucks’ power play unit went 2-for-8 thanks to KSchmitt. The penalty killers turned in a flawless 5-for-5 performance. Freshman goalie Kassidy Sauve tended the OSU nets for today’s game. She stopped all 17 St. Cloud shots en route to her fifth shutout of the season.

This series completed the ladies’ season schedule against the Huskies. The Buckeyes win the season series with a 3-1-0 record. The sweep vaulted OSU into third place in the WCHA. The team’s 30 points currently put them five ahead of Duluth and five back of Minnesota.
The ladies look to keep climbing next week when they return home to play North Dakota. Games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 6pm at the OSU Ice Rink.
