Buckeyes comprise two-thirds of this week's Big Ten Hockey Stars of the Week. Newly-minted Century Club member Nick Schilkey leads the league as the First Star. Dave “Chapeaux” Gust gets the nod for the Second Star.

A five point series against Connecticut earned Schilkey top honors. This is his second such recognition this season. He netted the game winning goal in Friday’s victory and added a pair of assists.

In the process he topped the 100 point mark for his career. The Michigander is the fifty-eighth Buckeye to join the century club. He is currently tied with Mark Shortt and Sergio Somma at No. 51 on Ohio State’s all-time scoring chart (each standing at 104 points).

Schilkey tallied another goal and assist in Saturday’s tie. With 15 total points he is one of the top point producers in the nation (tied for eleventh). He is tied for second overall in goal scoring with 10 lamp-lighters.

Scan a little further down the NCAA’s goal leaders list and you’ll find our Second Star of the Week. Gust is tied for eighth overall with eight total goals. He racked up four scores last week to lead all Big Ten players.

Gust struck three times in Friday’s win, recording the first hat trick of his Ohio State career. (You can see it here in the NCAA's top plays of the week.) The senior contributed a power play goal in Saturday’s tie. He was also the only Buckeye to cash in on his shootout attempt.

Nate Sucese of Penn State is the Big Ten’s Third Star of the Week. The freshman forward collected four points against Alaska-Anchorage, two goals and two assists. The Nittany Lions swept the series.

Schilkey, Gust, and the rest of the Buckeyes head to New York this week for a road series at RPI. Games are scheduled for 7pm ET starts on both Friday and Saturday. The team has a bye the following week and then schleps to Minnesota for its Big Ten opener.

  • In addition to Schilkey and Gust, Bucks on the national leader boards include Matt Weis (15 points, tied for eleventh) and Tanner Laczynski (14 points, tied for sixteenth).
  • The Buckeyes presently own the No. 1 offense in the nation, scoring an average of 4.55 goals per game.
  • Ohio State stays at No. 14 in the USCHO poll this week and edges up to No. 13 in the USA Today/USA Hockey rankings.
  • Other Big Ten team rankings are as follows: No. 7 Minnesota, No. 10/11 Penn State, No. 16 Michigan. Wisconsin is also receiving votes in the USCHO poll.
