No single hero starred for the Buckeyes at Wisconsin on Friday night. Instead Ohio State pulled together and faced the Badgers with a total team effort. Each man played a role and every player contributed as the Bucks “little” victories turned into one big win.

OSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Drew Brevig put the Buckeyes on the board first with a hefty bomb from the point. The puck wound its way through a mass of humanity in front of the net as several of Brevig's teammates paid the price to provide a screen.

Brevig was instrumental in the Bucks’ second score as well. The senior defenseman laid the puck up in an empty area near the net. Dave Gust hustled after it and beat Wisconsin goalie Jack Berry with his sixteenth goal of the season.

In the second period, hard work and hustle led to a third Ohio State goal. Kevin Miller and Dave Gust pursued the puck behind the Badger net. Gust wrangled the rubber off the wall and fed Dakota Joshua in the slot. Joshua muscled through the Wisconsin defense and staked OSU to a 3-0 lead.

Matt Ustaski put the Badgers on the board with a power play tally at the 9:44 mark, but it didn’t take the Buckeyes long to regain their three goal cushion. Mason Jobst drove hard to the net. His shot was stopped. However, Miguel Fidler, following hard on Jobst’s heels, was in perfect position to pot the rebound.

Although Ohio State had its way at even strength throughout the game, the potent Buckeye power play took a while to get going. Wisconsin shut OSU out in its first three attempts but the fourth time was the charm for the Bucks. Midway through the final frame Jobst netted the team’s first man-advantage goal of the night.

The tally was point No. 49 on the season for OSU’s top point man. Jobst’s next point will make him the first Buckeye to record 50 points in a season since R.J. Umberger surpassed the mark in 2002-03.

The OSU power play got another opportunity late in the game as Wisconsin’s frustration boiled over. Seamus Malone was issued a major penalty for spearing plus a game disqualification with a little over five minutes to go. This did not apparently relieve the Badgers’ irritation.

The chippiness continued on the ensuing advantage. Nick Schilkey went hard into the wall and left the ice in some distress. Steve Rohlik wisely rolled his lower lines for much of the remainder of the game. The Buckeyes kept their heads down, did not get riled, and finished off the win without further incident.

Ohio State and Wisconsin resume hostilities and close out the regular season tomorrow night at 8pm ET. The game will air live on BTN. It can also be streamed online via BTN2Go.

  • The Badgers outshot the Buckeye 29-18 in the game.
  • Twelve different skaters registered a shot on goal for the Scarlet and Gray.
  • Ohio State was 1-for-5 on the power play. Wisconsin went 1-for-6 with the advantage.
  • The Bucks held an edge in blocked shots, 17-12.
  • Drew Brevig, Dave Gust, and Mason Jobst led OSU with a goal and an assist each.
Updated Big Ten Standings

Michigan topped Penn State tonight, 3-2. Minnesota blanked Michigan State, 4-0. Those results combined with Ohio State’s win mean the Gophers clinch the regular season Big Ten title. Wisconsin is assured a second place finish. The Buckeyes jump the Nittany Lions and move into third, but that position is not secure. The outcome of tomorrow’s games will decide the final placement of OSU and PSU. Michigan and Michigan State are locked into fifth and sixth, respectively.
