As mentioned above, Martinez is the first Nebraska freshman quarterback in history to start a season opener. He was a four-star prospect out of Fresno, California. He was pursued by Ohio State for some time after the departure of Emory Jones, but the Buckeyes decided to go with Matthew Baldwin instead.
Nebraska, Minnesota, and Rutgers have now all announced that they will be starting true freshman quarterbacks for their respective season-openers.
The Huskers open the season against Akron this Saturday at 8:00pm. Nebraska visits Ohio State on Nov. 3.
