There's an interesting shift that happens when an Ohio State football player graduates and moves on to the world of the NFL. Guys who once commanded reverence and respect are now beholden to the iron laws of the NFL: Thou shalt be of prototypical size, thou shalt answer dumb interview questions without laughing, thou shalt become a faceless automaton if you want to keep your practice squad spot, etc.
So J.T. Barrett, holder of a billion Ohio State and Big Ten records as a quarterback, didn't end up drafted, whereas Denzel Ward, while great, didn't have nearly the collegiate career that Barrett did and ends up drafted 4th.
And the cold logic of the whole thing is that yeah, that's actually about right. This week we were lucky enough to bring on Matt Wilhelm, former Ohio State linebacker and current Cleveland Browns analyst, to explain to us the thought process that goes into drafting players like Ward and company. He's incredibly frank when talking about Barrett's prospects in the NFL, and it's honestly great to hear from someone as well-informed and forthright as he is.
Plus, Ask Us Anything wants to to weigh in on Ohio State superfans, and if you have any superfan and non-superfan related questions, you can hit us up on Twitter or via e-mail. Also, if this podcast floats your boat, we'd love it if you could rate and subscribe to us on iTunes.
0:00 The draft was a big deal, but also interesting was Harbaugh finally getting a quarterback worth his salt. We'll see if it actually pays off in the fall.
23:06 Matt Wilhelm talks about the thought process that goes in the minds of NFL GMs and coaches as the draft players, and whether Ohio State really is DB U in their minds.
38:53 I hate pretty much the entire year between April and like 75% of September. Thank you, Ask Us Anything, for reminding me how many sweaty pits I have in store for me.
And that will do it for this week, thanks to you for listening and checking out our Dry Goods store, thanks to Travis for our logo, and we'll see you next time!
