According to Logan Hickman of TheLantern.com, Ohio State could be zeroing in on Jon Waters' replacement.
Dr. Corey Spurlin, currently employed at Auburn as the marching band director and an associate music professor, will be on campus today and tomorrow.
Beyond that? Here's a blurb offered by Spurlin's current Auburn staff page:
In addition to his work with the Sudler-winning Auburn Marching Band and Pep Band, Dr. Spurlin conducts the Concert Band, Campus Band, and is associate conductor of the Symphonic Band. He also teaches courses in wind band literature, and marching band techniques. Under his direction, the Auburn University Marching Band, with 380 students, has the largest membership in university history and has performed at the Southeastern Conference Championship Game and the BCS National Championship Game, as well as the Chick-fil-a Bowl, the Outback Bowl, and overseas at the world’s most famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. The band finished third in ESPN’s 2008 national “Battle of the Bands” promotion.
As for Spurlin's portfolio, well, you can judge that for yourself. Here's a halftime performance during last year's clash against Arkansas:
Now, this isn't a done-deal just yet. Spurlin is still "only" a finalist, but he will host band rehearsal the next two days (after which, he'll be the subject to an anonymous performance review by current band members).
I won't pretend to be a music authority, but I'm confident the tradition of The Best Damn Band in the Land will be upheld regardless.
