For the second straight year, Michigan State eliminated Virginia from the NCAA tournament. Michigan State used a stifling defense to hold Virginia to just 18 points in the first half. The second half was a see-saw battle that saw Michigan State win 60-54 in the end.

Travis Trice was the player of the game for Michigan State. He started the game scoring Michigan State's first 13 points. He finished with 23 points, shooting 7/15 from the floor and a blistering 4/8 from behind the arc. Branden Dawson contributed 15 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.

Virginia, not known for offense, struggled from the floor. The Cavaliers finished the game shooting 17/57 from the floor, a paltry make rate of 29.8%. In last year's loss to Michigan State in the Sweet 16, then No.1 seed Virginia mustered just a 35% make rate from the floor. Virginia should be happy to not see Michigan State on the schedule for a while.

This outcome is immaterial for Ohio State fans still licking their wounds from yesterday's tournament exit, but it is noteworthy that now the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds are eliminated from the East Regional. No. 8 seed NC State took down No.1 Villanova yesterday.

Michigan State awaits the winner of Oklahoma and Dayton, which will play later today.
