Kent State has been playing football for 99 years. Friday night, the Golden Flashes made history, winning their first-ever bowl game, topping Utah State, 51-41, in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl.
The Golden Flashes, the program that Nick Saban and Jack Lambert call home, were previously 0–3 in bowl games, losing 17-13 most recently in the 2012 GoDaddy.com Bowl to Arkansas State but erupted for 25 points in the fourth quarter Friday to upset the Aggies and make history.
The Flashes piled up 550 yards in the win, with 298 of them coming on the ground. Kent State quarterback Dustin Crum, a Grafton, Ohio native, bagged Offensive MVP honors for the game after racking up 436 total yards, including a career-high 147 on the ground.
Cleveland St. Ignatius grad Matthew Trickett was a perfect 5/5, tying an NCAA record for most field goals in a bowl game.
The Golden Flashes, who started the season 3–6, finished on a four-game winning streak under coach Sean Lewis.
