No ACC quarterback has ever thrown for more passing yards in a single season than Kyle McCord this season.
The former Ohio State quarterback blew by the ACC’s single-season passing record on Friday night as he finished his season at Syracuse with 4,779 yards, breaking the previous record of 4,593 yards set by Clemson’s Deshaun Watson in 2016.

McCord broke the record on a 50-yard connection with Darrell Gill Jr. in the third quarter of Syracuse’s 52-35 Holiday Bowl win against Washington State.

What a play for @CuseFootball and a historic one for Kyle McCord pic.twitter.com/ohl05F4Gzy
McCord completed 24 of 34 passing attempts for 453 yards and a season-high five touchdowns in Friday’s game as Syracuse completed its first 10-win season since 2018.
With McCord breaking the ACC record, quarterbacks who started their college careers at Ohio State now hold the single-season passing records in three power conferences. Dwayne Haskins set the Big Ten record in his lone season as Ohio State’s starting quarterback in 2018, when he threw for 4,831 yards. Joe Burrow, who transferred to LSU after losing Ohio State’s starting quarterback competition for the 2018 season to Haskins, set the SEC record with 5,671 yards in 2019.
McCord – who led the entire FBS with 4,326 passing yards during the regular season – transferred to Syracuse last December after one season as Ohio State’s starting quarterback.
The Buckeyes replaced McCord with Will Howard, who has had plenty of success of his own by completing 73.2% of his passes for 3,171 yards and 29 touchdowns while running for another seven touchdowns this season, leading Ohio State to a 10-2 regular-season record and a first-round College Football Playoff win over Tennessee. He’ll have the chance to build on that success when the Buckeyes play Oregon in the CFP quarterfinals at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday.
