1903 - In one of the most tragic and mystifying stories in MLB history, Ed Delahanty died when he fell off a railroad bridge into the Niagara River and went over the falls.  Ed was one of FIVE brother who all played major league baseball.  Born in Cleveland and one of the scariest hitters of his era, Ed was a hard drinking and hard living guy.  On a train trip, he got drunk and belligerent and the conductor put him off the train.  He tried to follow it on the tracks and wandered on the forementioned bridge where he either lost his balance or was knocked off by another train.

Ed has the fifth highest career batting average of all time and is one of only two players to hit over .400 three times in National League history.

Now onto other cheerier baseball moments.

Also 1903  Jack Doscher makes his debut as a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs.  He becomes the first son of a major league player to also make the major leagues.

1963  Willie Mays homers off of Warren Spahn in the 16th inning in walk off fashion to end the longest game in National League history to end in a walkoff home run.

1970 Horace Clarke breaks up Joe Niekro's bid for a no hitter in the ninth inning.  It is the 3rd time in 30 days that Horace has broken a pitcher's heart as he previously broke up Jim Rooker (Oak) and Sonny Siebert (Bosox) bids.  (Sonny did previously pitch a no hitter for the Indians in 1966.)
