Cover 3 podcast moved on to the B1G West so thought I would do so as well. This is VERY hard to predict with how badly covid affected the B1G west games last year. Wisconsin is the favorite but we barely got to see them and when we did they looked bad with lots of players out. Northwestern won the division and beat Auburn but is expected to take a big step back. Here are the totals and my thoughts:

  • Wisconsin-9.5 Wins-Open the season with PSU before playing EMU then Notre Dame and Michigan. This is a brutal schedule for the B1G West favorites. I think they are probably the better team in each of those games but that would be 3 good programs they have to beat in september. Graham Mertz and Jalen Burger form a very talented backfield, Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor return at receiver along with Jake Ferguson at tight end. All of that and they should have a very good OL. This offense could be a beast. The defense returns 3/4 secondary, 3/4 linebackers, and 1/3 of the lineman. I love this OVER, I think the helmets they are playing are scarier than the actual teams. PSU, Michigan, and Notre Dame should be a 2-1 stretch and then I get another mulligan the rest of the way. The schedule sets up well with the good teams all playing in Madison and the easy games on the road.
  • Iowa-8.5 Wins-The most underrated team in the B1G last year. They lost by 4 and 1 points in the first two weeks and then went on an absolute tear to end the season. They beat Wisconsin by 21, PSU by 20, MSU by 42, and Minnesota by 28 before having their bowl game cancelled. After starting 0-2 everybody just forgot they existed. They come back with a returning QB, 1st team B1G RB who averaged 5.5 ypc, a dominant OL with 3 returning IOL led by All American Tyler Linderbaum. They return 6/7 in the front 7 and 3/4 in the secondary. This is a very good football team. The schedule is Indiana, @ISU, PSU, @Maryland, and 2 easy ooc wins. This is my favorite pick of the entire B1G, give me that OVER. I dont expect many slip ups and they are capable of beating every single team on the schedule. An early season upset of ISU makes this a lock and I dont think ISU is all that much better than Iowa.
  • Minnesota-7 Wins-MiamiOH, Colorado, and Bowling Green should be 3 easy wins OOC. But they also draw OSU, Indiana, and Maryland from the east. They return all 5 offensive lineman who are all super seniors except Daniel Faalele(senior) and have Tanner Morgan(QB) Mo Ibrahim(RB) and Chris Autman Bell(WR) all back as the #1s from their positions last year. The defense was complete garbage last season but they have 10 starters back. This is one of the most experienced teams in the country. I like this OVER because I dont think they will go 3-6 in the B1G after winning 3 ooc games.
  • Northwestern-6.5 Wins-HAMMER THE UNDER. They lose their QB, top 2 RBs, and top 3 WRs, on what was already a bad offense. They also lost a lot of talent on defense to the NFL(Greg Newsome, Paddy Fisher, Blake Gallagher, Earnest Brown) had a ton of guys leave in the transfer portal. Along with losing longtime DC this will be one of the few teams in the country with very few starters back. Indiana State, Duke, and Ohio are an easy ooc schedule so hopefully they can make it to bowl eligible but this will not be a good football team this year.
  • Nebraska-6 wins-Man you have to feel bad for Nebraska at this point. They have 9/11 starters back on defense and an influx of talent through the portal on offense. This is Frost's best team by far since he has been at Nebraska. But the schedule is brutal with Oklahoma, OSU, Michigan, and @MSU from the east. If everything goes perfect for this team they are 7-5 at best. I wouldn't touch this number because 6 is low for what should be a talented team but I would take the UNDER.
  • Purdue-5 wins-Brutal schedule with Notre Dame, Oregon State ooc and OSU and Indiana from the east. They are also clearly worse than Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota. I dont think this is a bad team with 9/11 starters back on offense and some serious talent on defense but getting to 6 wins would require an upset or two along the way. Similar to Nebraska I think this may be too good of a team to bet an under on a low number but I would lean that way to Nebraska.
  • Illinois-3.5-New coach in Bert gets an extremely low number. OOC schedule is UTSA, Charlotte, and Virginia. They also get Maryland and Rutgers. This is a pretty easy schedule with a very low number. Luke Ford(UGA) Jafar Armstrong(ND) and Khmari Thompson(Mizzou) are all transfering in to start at pass catching/Tight end positions along with a 3rd team all B1G RB and a returning QB in Brandon Peters. They also have 4 super seniors returning to start on the OL. Bert hit the portal hard and with 2 free wins I would be shocked if he cant find 2 more wins from an easy schedule. OVER
