Everyone knows what a win, a tie, and a loss are. We keep score to determine those. Is there an agreed upon definition of a Good Loss versus a Bad Win, as it relates to football? At one point in the BCS early days, there was a computerized ranking that ranked Good Losses.
Never mind the whole "morale victory" thing that coaches always say they don't celebrate (they do). Let's start with some basic talking points:
- Scenario 1: Team Alpha beats Team Beta by 1-8 points for the win.
- Scenario 2: Team Alpha beats Team Beta by 9-16 points for the win.
- Scenario 3: Team Alpha beats Team Beta by 17-27 points for the win.
- Scenario 4: Team Alpha beats Team Beta by 28+ points for the win.
I chose these 4 scenarios based on the rough number of times a team scored.
Question 1: Are any of these Good or Bad Wins for Team Alpha? Are any of these Good or Bad Losses for Team Beta?
Question 2: If you take the same scenarios with Team Alpha being ranked (say #11), but Team Beta not being ranked (outside top 25), does that change the definition of Good or Bad?
I would suggest that any football victory by 28+ points is a Good Win/Bad Loss. I feel like any upset victory by Team Beta would be a Good Win for them, and a Bad Loss for Team Alpha. What do you think?
