My 14 year old son and I were talking Ohio State vs UM sports. He started discussing which UM people were the most obnoxious and the biggest clowns (I call them A$$-Hats). People associated with UM that say and do things that are so arrogant without a hint of self-awareness (not fans). We started to make a list. His knowledge of the rivalry is obviously more recent.
We gave the criteria that this does not include a player just because they are good and is frustrating to OSU, but more along the lines of classless and loud mouthed. We used Aidan Hutchinson as an example of someone that is good and it is definitely frustrating when he makes plays against OSU. However, I am not aware of him being obnoxious or classless on social media or interviews, etc. He said OSU motivated him and he used some of OSU comments as fuel. We consider that to be part of the rivalry and not classless. Hutchinson also did not take part in the Heisman jokes and seemed truly uncomfortable that they were made.
The first person my son and I thought of as classless UM player/coach is Desmond Howard for obvious reasons. Maybe it is recency bias, but he has to be at or near the top of the list for most people. My son continued to name people and it was a fun discussion. Here is my son's list...
1. Desmond Howard
2. Chase Winovich
3. Jim Harbaugh
4. Jabrill Peppers
5. Jourdan Lewis
I imagine several people would have Harbaugh at the top of their list both as a player and a coach. However, I think my son views him as a cartoon character at this point. I think JJ McCarthy is a strong contender to make this list at some point. Charles Woodson, Taylor Lewan, Braylon Edwards, Tate Forcier, Kyle Kalis, and Mike Hart have to be in the conversation, but my son left them off due to his age and not knowing them as well. Also, the conversation did not even go into basketball. The Fab Five alone could almost make a case as the top five.
In the end, the important thing I did as a father was make sure my son understands the necessary amount of disgust needed toward TTUN. I could have had a conversation with him about drinking, drugs, girls, or even UFOs. However, those conversations pale in comparison to the importance of the OSU-TTUN rivalry (just kidding-sorta). Besides, once the groundwork of contempt towards UM is properly established, my son will have a strong moral compass to get him through the rest of life's challenges! Go Bucks!
