This is actually the 2nd coach replaced recently as the WBB coach also left this past year.
The University of Florida fired its new soccer coach Wednesday after only one season amid unprecedented numbers of players leaving the program after his hiring and complaints by athletes who said he pressured them about eating habits and their bodies.
Since Amato’s hiring was announced in May 2021, four Florida players have quit with remaining eligibility and 13 more have entered the NCAA transfer portal intending to change schools. The 13 transfers represent 30% of the team’s players during that period.
Shortly after Florida hired Amato, allegations from players about its recently departed women’s basketball coach, Cam Newbauer, became public. He resigned in July, just after he was offered a three-year contract extension.
In September, The Independent Florida Alligator – the student newspaper at UF – cited complaints by players saying Newbauer made racist remarks, threw basketballs at players during practices and verbally abused the team, assistant coaches and trainers. One former UF women’s basketball player attempted suicide.
