As was mentioned in today’s Skull Session, The Athletic reported that the NCAA’s Division 1 Council is expected to waive the requirement that conferences either have divisions or schedule round-robin games in order to have a conference championship game.
ESPN has reported that the ACC is looking into a 3-5-5 model in which its 14 teams would each play three traditional rivals every year and then rotate the remaining 10 teams every other year, i.e., five on and five off. This plan would ensure that over the course of four years, every school would play all 13 ACC teams at least twice, including home and away games to help spice up variety. The two best teams would meet for the conference championship. ESPN’s Pete Thamel says it could go into effect as early as next year.
If the B1G was to implement a 3-5-5 model, which three teams would you like to see be Ohio State’s permanent rivalry games? Michigan would obviously be one but what about the other two? I’d be personally content with Penn State and Illinois—the Nittany Lions have been Ohio State’s toughest opponent for the past 10+ years, while the Illini are second only to Michigan in games Ohio State has played against another B1G team (103 times). The Illibuck is also Ohio State’s only trophy game. Long live the turtle!
