It's always kind of crazy to me how some guys seem to just totally flame out.
Herman spent two years as a rising star OC at Iowa State, then three years at OSU (including rapidly getting a backup ready to win a NCG), and then went 22-4 at Houston. He clearly knows what he's doing.
He goes 7-6 his first year at Texas, followed by 10-4. Things are looking up! Then...a 7 win season, 8 win season, fired. Goes to the Bears in an offseason role, spends a year unemployed, gets the FAU job and poos the bed (6 wins total across two years).
You dont just wake up one morning and forget how to coach, or suddenly get passed by. Did he get a big enough paycheck to just stop caring?
