This is from a previous post I made:
College educations over the last 60 years was one of two things.
You either go to get "An Education"...a fallacy that our parents bought into that you needed to get a college degree (because many of them never had the chance to do so) to get a better job. Well that lasted from the 60's thru 90's....Now a college degree just gets you an interview (unless you are pursuing a medical, engineering, accounting , law(yers) ..or an IT degree". Communication degrees, general business, sociology / art / history degrees..you'll be working at McDonalds for your first job.
The second reason to attend college is to meet people who can help you get jobs for the next 40 years of your life.
Harvard is a prime example.
Their education is no better than TOSU or Stanford...but they are Harvard. The books they study from are pretty much the same as the students from Valdosta State or Slippery Rock. Harvards "heralded" professors spend little time teaching. They do "research" and have Grad Assts..... who can't speak English teach the freshman and sophomore classes.
The difference is the Kids sitting around you.
At Harvard you may have a Governors kid from New York sitting to your left. The girl in front of you ...her Dad is the CEO of Google/XYZ company. The guy sitting to your right is a 5th generation Kennedy....old school money...(truly wealthy). The girl behind you is from Abu Dhabi whose Dad owns 4 billion dollars worth of oil wells. (and our dependance on oil isn't going away any time soon).
You should go to college to maximize your earning potential. So whether its playing the trombone, or playing pro football for 3-5 years..find a school that can help you maximize your skills.
When you can find a school like TOSU...which offers the opportunities to be both "educated" and can maximize your earning potential (by meeting the right people)....well then your decesion should be very easy to make.
