Kyle Snyder failed to medal for the first time in three trips to the Olympics.

His quest for a second Olympic gold medal ended in Saturday’s 97kg freestyle semifinals. The former Ohio State wrestler lost to Bahrain’s Akhmed Tazhudinov, 6-4, marking the first time in three trips to the Olympics that Snyder failed to advance to the gold medal match.

Snyder, who won gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio – in between his sophomore and junior years at Ohio State – and earned a silver medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021, still had a chance to medal in the bronze medal match on Sunday morning. He left Paris without hardware, however, as he dropped a 4-1 decision to Iran’s Amarali Azarpiar.

Snyder was the final Buckeye still competing in the Olympics, which conclude Sunday.

Athletes from Ohio State combined to win six medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Former Ohio State swimmer Hunter Armstrong won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay and a silver medal in the 4x100 medley relay for Team USA. Ohio State artistic swimmers Keana Hunter and Ruby Remati won silver medals as members of the U.S. artistic swimming team. Former Ohio State fencers Eleanor Harvey and Maximilen Chastanet each won bronze medals; Harvey earned a third-place finish for Canada in the women’s individual foil while Chastanet was a part of France’s bronze-winning squad in the men’s team foil.
