High School
In 1993, his senior year, Finkes placed fourth in the high hurdles at the State of Ohio Track and Field Championships. Earlier that year he won the Division I state wrestling championship as a heavyweight and made the Junior World Team. He was also a decent football player who earned a scholarship to play at Ohio State.
Ohio State
Finkes was a winner at Ohio State as well. The Buckeyes were 41-8-1 when he played on the team from 1993-1996. During that time the defense held opponents to 15 points per game and had five shut-outs. The 1996 defense holds Ohio State's record for tackles for loss yards in a season with 507 yards.
Matt Finkes also made his mark on the Ohio State record book as an individual. In 1994 he set the all-time record with 80 sack yards lost (he is now 4th). That season he also recorded 11 sacks, which at the time placed him 2nd all-time (he is now 5th). Finkes is also ranked third all-time with 25.0 sacks for his career.
NFL
The Carolina Panthers drafted Matt Finkes in the 6th round of the 1997 draft. He was then traded to the New York Jets where he played through 1999. Finkes was on the Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars between 1999 and 2001.
