Should the Conference Revenue Be Tiered?

This going to sound cocky as anything, but I think there’s strong evidence to support this isn’t just a fans opinion that we are more important than another school….

With the announcement that the Indiana game is kicking off at noon, we’re going to close the regular season with 8 straight consecutive noon kicks and Fox Big Noon has basically made Columbus its home for the last half of the season. Is it time to start looking at a revenue sharing based on tiers or based on how you finish the season?

There is a couple ways to do this and I might lose some folks with this thought process, but Formula 1 actually does this based on the constructors championship (think Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and the actual teams, not drivers) and where you place at the end of the year. It makes that really important as you’re talking the difference in 10s of millions of dollars that’s getting funneled back into the team.

It would be highly interesting to see the Big 10 do something similar based on the revenue from TV, Playoffs, Bowls… and instead of it just being split evenly, it’s based on the conference standings, did you participate in the Conference Championship - that’s a bonus, did you go to a bowl - that’s a bonus, was it a major bowl, was it a playoff, how many extra games did you put the conference logo on TV in the playoffs, etc.

I doesn’t seem fair that OSU and Purdue are going to get the same check at the end of the year when it’s clear one had more to do with the money everyone is making than the other and again, it’s not personal opinion, but their is hard evidence as to what team the networks are interested in, the bowl payouts are known, etc.

In the world of NIL… where it’s understandable why a kid like Downs can get paid more than a third string Safety at Northwestern and I think it’s time Ross and OSU sort of demand that the pay is fairly paid out across the Conference, which doesn’t mean equal pay… that’s more NIL for those programs, stadium upgrades, facility upgrades, etc.
