This comes up a lot because people assume Ryan Day wants to eventually coach in the NFL.

Recruiting and other booster type P.R. type requirements as well as the more year-round nature of the job have often been touted as the “downside” of CFB coaching.

But with some changes to the CFB structure such as instantly being able to improve your roster each year through the portal and NIL give CFB coaches more control over your team and destiny.  In the NFL, you could be great but your job is tied to bad GM decisions out of your control in the draft and salary cap. Or owners like Jerry Jones ruining things.

Also, now that college football has playoffs, the “lose one game and your season is ruined” mentality is shifting. As is the “voters decide who is good” being replaced by actually winning games on the field.

Ryan Day’s salary puts him in the top 10 of NFL coaches salary.  Further, he gets to have a legacy. You get to pour into the lives of young men (if you care about that) in ways that shape their lives forever.  It’s very very rare these days for an NFL coach to be able to be around long enough to create a legacy.  Most NFL head coaches are dime a dozen.

TL;DR - it seems like the portal and NIL, and playoffs, while not being without their problems, make the head coaching job at a school like OSU more desirable because they give the coach more direct ability to shape his team and destiny (IMO).

Would you rather be a Head Coach at a school like OSU or an NFL Head Coach?  Why?
