The Chargers fired their equipment manager today. Might not sound like much on the surface, but check this out. Bob Wick started with the team as a ball boy in 1979, and has been with the team ever since. He earned the NFL's Equipment Manager of the Year award a few years back. EVERYONE loves Bob. He's just an incredibly nice person, and extremely good at his job.
Anyway, back in January when given the option to keep his job and move with the team to Los Angeles, or leave the organization, Bob and his family put their home up for sale. It was a big deal for him, as he is a native San Diegan. So they sold their home and moved to LA. He oversaw the packing of the equipment room in SD, installing the new facility in LA, opening training camp on time, and getting all of the players outfitted through camp.
Yesterday, on the last day of camp, he was called into the front offices and told that the team is going in another direction and he is no longer an employee. Six months severance, and he's now out of a job. He, his wife and kids are in a brand new city after making the commitment to the team and uprooting their entire lives. As if fans of the Chargers didn't really need another reason to dislike the owners and organization, but they certainly gave one more.
If this were you what would you feel? Why would the team move him and his family only to let him go that quickly? Self serving effort of the team if you ask me. Timing is impeccable because I am boycotting the entire league and no longer watching what they are peddling.
