After 21 seasons in Columbus, the winningest coach in Ohio State men's soccer history is hanging it up, as head coach John Bluem announced his retirement on Monday afternoon.
Bluem won 206 games during his time at Ohio State, a program record, and led the Buckeyes to four Big Ten titles and all 10 of Ohio State’s appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the 2007 College Cup where the Buckeyes finished as runners up.
Before Bluem's arrival in Columbus, the Buckeyes had finished above .500 just twice in the previous decade.
“I would like to express my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to all of the players I have had the opportunity to coach and develop relationships with," Bluem said in an Ohio State release. "I will treasure the memories we have shared together for the rest of my life."
Bluem helped produce 17 Major League Soccer draft picks, four All-Americans, two Big Ten Players of the Year, one Big Ten Offensive player of the Year and four Big Ten Defensive Players of the Year
He was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year four times, second only to Jerry Yeagley for the most awards in conference history.
